The Secret to Finding a Job: Know When to Bend the Rules

When looking for a great job, the process can be extremely exhausting.  You might feel frustrated about the lack of opportunities out there, but o matter how frustrated you become, don’t despair.  Your dream job may be a lot closer than  you think.  When your ready to do whatever it takes, that’s when you will be ready to find your dream job.

The standard steps to finding a new job are to search, apply, and then go on an interview.  The steps may sound familiar, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that this is the best way to go about find a new job.  Consider some other strategies that may help you land your dream job.

Don’t apply for a job, create your own job.  Finding job openings is easy, anyone can do that.  But sometimes an employer may be in need of someone but that haven’t gotten around to posting the job opening just yet.  Contact businesses that you would like to work for and ask if they have any openings, or if they may have any in the near future.  Get to know the people who are in charge of hiring, and ask them to let you know as soon as they have something available.  Networking can be a very powerful tool, and it can’t hurt to stay in touch with people who can someday land you your dream job, even if they can’t do it today.

Don’t be discouraged by job requirements.  Many times a job might be perfect for you, but the requirements list a 4 year college degree, which you don’t have.  Many times, employers will accept comparable job experience instead.  So, while you may not have 4 years of college, you do have 8 years of experience doing the job that they are looking for you to fill.  Be up front, and sell them why you are perfect for the job.  Often times, requirements are simply guidelines, and more often than not an employer will waive them for the perfect candidate, so make yourself that perfect candidate!

Be creative.  Start your own blog or website to display your skills and creativity.  Create unique business cards specifically for job hunting.  Find a way to stand out, and you won’t need to find your dream job because your dream job will find you.
